Lucy vs Tanya
The Tanya merrett v Lucy Payne rematch was destined to be a mental strain on Lucy as there is little to gain for the existing champion giving second chances.
However, honoring rematches and defending rankings/titles is what we pride touchgloves gym on and I am a firm believer in practicing what I preach.
Tanya merrett is what I describe as a “real” female muaythai fighter.
It is very unfortunate that I can openly say that people like Tanya are a true minority nowadays in the uk and I have the utmost respect for both Tanya as a fighter and coach lee power for constantly testing his students rather than duck decent adversary like many others choose to do.
Lucy was extremely nervous for this bout, those who train alongside her or who have been lucky enough to watch her compete live would see an aggressive, well skilled 6ft wrecking machine, but warm up rooms nearly always present a much more humble, natural and doubtful individual to which a coach must be understanding, compassionate and supportive alongside stamping clarity on the desired “job in hand”.
By the time Lucy entered the ring, she was confident and excited in showing her performance to the welsh crowd.
Tanya will always be a good match for any 55-57kg fighter as she brings the fight to them with hard low kicks and an ability to absorb elbow techniques whilst constantly marching forward.
I believe Lucy Payne to be the best female fighter in the United Kingdom and well within the capability of becoming world no1 before the age of 25yrs.
When you think that the “queen of muay” Julie kitchen did not start training muaythai until 23yrs and under the same trainer then it is not unrealistic for me to make this statement.
If however you believe it a false statement then please prove it and help me discard the fact that Lucy Payne is the worlds most avoided female fighter.
The first round of this fight saw a very aggressive start from Lucy, Tanya landed a host of hard low kicks and some hard single right hands that rocked the head back but Lucy remained balanced and calm.
At the call of the last 20 seconds Lucy unleashed a combo of fast hand techniques followed by a devastating body kick which saw the tough welsh fighter unable to continue.
Not many fighters could have survived the kick and a very disappointed Tanya should her head high for being the only British female to take on Lucy in the last 2 years.
